Decipher: Fourteen Cryptograms
Each year Pentagram issues a small holiday book as a greeting to its friends and colleagues. The partners take turns researching and designing these books, which usually contain some kind of game or activity. The most recent edition is Decipher, designed by Harry Pearce, who chose as its subject cryptography, the science of writing, or encrypting—and breaking, or decrypting—secret code.
The book features 14 cryptograms of varying methodologies and difficulty that conceal short phrases; through symbols, numbers, patterns and simple letterspacing, the cyptograms challenge the reader to decipher their meaning. “It’s astonishing how much you can hide in type,” says Pearce.
Now we have adapted the book’s content online and are pleased to present the 14 cryptograms in a minisite here. Can you break the code?
New Work: Grant Thornton

Angus Hyland and his team have designed the new identity system for Grant Thornton international, a major global organisation of accounting and consulting firms with member and correspondent firms in over 100 countries worldwide.

An Evening with Jonathan Hoefler

Pentagram’s London office was delighted to welcome members of the Typographic Circle on the evening of Tuesday, 8 April for a lecture by the typographer Jonathan Hoefler, a long-standing collaborator and friend of Pentagram.
As half of Hoefler & Frere-Jones, Jonathan has established a reputation as one of the world’s preeminent type designers. His talk, which coincides with a trip to London to act as a judge for the D&AD awards alongside Domenic Lippa and Harry Pearce amongst others, was used to introduce Typographic Circle members to his approach to typography.
Domenic Lippa, a former chairman of the Typographic Circle and an organiser of the talk, said of the evening: “It was great to be able to host an evening for the Typographic Circle, who I still help out with, but to be able to do it with such a good friend of Pentagram as Jonathan made it all the more enjoyable. It was a lovely evening.”
Hoefler & Frere-Jones have collaborated with Pentagram on several projects, including the design of typefaces for the New York Jets and Lever House.
The Typographic Circle is a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers which formed in 1976 to bring together anyone with an active interest in type and typography. Alongside a regular newsletter and a calendar of lectures and social events, all members receive free copies of the award-winning Circular Magazine, designed by Domenic Lippa. Full membership information can be found on their website.
Introducing the Black Book
Pentagram is pleased to announce the publication of the Black Book, a new 800-page overview of our recent work. The book is a compilation of over 400 projects from the last several years, arranged in alphabetical order, like a dictionary, and printed on Bible paper, like a Bible, complete with tabbed sections and ribbons for bookmarking. It covers pretty much everything we do, from architecture to graphics, buildings to websites, branding to signage, interiors, packaging, exhibitions, interfaces, furniture, products, brochures, magazines, and houses, all in simple picture-and-caption form.
CONTEST UPDATE: The Black Book giveaway contest is now closed. The 50 lucky winners will be contacted by email to confirm their information. We’ve had an overwhelming response—thanks to everyone for entering and for continuing to follow our work!

The posters will be displayed at London’s Old Street and Elephant and Castle roundabouts, as well as on billboard sites in Birmingham, Glasgow and Manchester.

New Work: Roy Harper, ‘The BBC Tapes’
Harry Pearce has designed the sleeve art for the re-issue of The BBC Tapes, a set of CDs by cult singer/songwriter Roy Harper, released by Harper’s Science Friction Records.
Pearce’s design for the series emulates Harper’s subtle poetry in its central motif; portraits of Harper, taken during the period the recordings were made, have been cropped so that the singer’s eyes are the same size within each image; evoking the intensity and intimacy of the recordings. The simple, vertical typography, set in Akzidenz Grotesk, and monochromatic treatment of the photographs means that the most direct way of differentiating between CDs at a glance is through Harpers’ facial expressions.

United Reveals New Cabin Design

United Airlines announced a breakthrough yesterday: this fall, they will be the first US carrier to feature fully reclining lie-flat seats in their International First and Business cabins. Pentagram’s Daniel Weil worked with United and a team of specialists throughout the intricate process of designing two new cabins.
“This is the moment where the customer is put first,” said Weil. Designed to provide more space and a better sense of privacy through an innovative forward- and rear-facing design and seats that recline 180˚ to form a six-foot-long bed, the first updated planes will take to the skies later this year. The entire international fleet will be updated in phases over the next two to three years.
The new cabins were designed in conjunction with industry experts B/E Aerospace. Pentagram has been United’s design consultant for nearly ten years, with responsibilities that have ranged from developing the airline’s current livery design, to naming its low-cost carrier Ted, to designing its self-service ticket dispensers, to consulting on tableware and in-flight amenities.

New Work: ‘This is a poster.’
Yes, this is a poster. It was designed by Angus Hyland and Fabrian Herrmann for a lecture given by Angus at the University of Plymouth last spring. But it has since taken on a life of its own, possibly because it makes plain the secret desire of all posters: to be entered into design competitions.
The poster was silkscreened in black and white on 25 different colors, in a limited run of four copies per color. It is featured in the June issue of Creative Review.
Variations after the jump.

Volume I focuses on Asia (Oriente) and features the work of artists from Japan, Korea, China and Taiwan, including Nobuyashi Araki, Hiroshi Sugimoto and Li Zhensheng, among others. Each issue also showcases a different typeface—here it’s Egyptian Bold Condensed.

New Work: The Myths

Cover illustration by Marion Deuchars
Angus Hyland and his team have designed “The Myths,” a new series from Canongate, the publisher for which he previously repackaged the Bible. Each book in the new series is a retelling of a myth by a renowned contemporary author. According to Canongate, the series is “the most ambitious simultaneous world-wide publication ever undertaken,” with 24 publishers issuing the books around the world. Angus created the series identity and will commission a different cover illustrator for each of the planned 200 titles — which are set to come out at a rate of three per year, wrapping up sometime around 2070. Yes, Angus is one of the Immortals.
The project was featured in last month’s issue of Creative Review.
New Work: Stanley Kubrick
Angus Hyland and his team have designed the book Stanley Kubrick Drama & Shadows: Photographs 1945-1950, published by Phaidon Press. The book collects previously unpublished images shot by Kubrick while he was a staff photographer at Look magazine, before he directed his first feature film. The design emphasizes the ways in which he used photography to cultivate the visual techniques and themes found in his later work.
