‘American Symbols’ Opens at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art
Kit Hinrichs has spent over forty years collecting American ephemera and 75 pieces from his remarkable collection are now on display at the Museum of Craft and Folk Art in San Francisco. The exhibition American Symbols: From Lady Liberty to the Stars and Stripes features representations of the American flag, the Bald Eagle, Uncle Sam and Lady Liberty, amongst others, that Kit says “evoke immediate recognition, emotional power and universal meaning” as well as trace the graphic history of the country.
Kit will discuss the art of collecting and sign copies of his latest book, 100 American Flags: A Unique Collection of Old Glory Memorabilia at the museum on Saturday 12 July at 2pm.
The exhibition opened to the public last Friday and will be on view through August 3, 2008. Photos from Thursday night’s opening party after the jump.

Kit Hinrichs at the Type Directors Club

Kit Hinrichs will present “Art as Type, Type as Art,” a master class at the Type Directors Club in New York. Kit will share his personal typographic influences and discuss how to utilize the emotional power of type in one’s design. The seminar includes an introduction and reception on the afternoon of Friday, 25 April followed by a full day’s class on Saturday, 26 April. Details and registration info here.
New Work: ‘100 Baseball Icons’
Just in time for opening day, Kit Hinrichs has designed 100 Baseball Icons, published by Ten Speed Press. The book, a collaborative effort between Hinrichs, photographer Terry Heffernan and writer Delphine Hirasuna, tells the story of America’s favorite pastime through memorabilia from the National Baseball Hall of Fame and Museum in Cooperstown, New York. Heffernan, a lifelong baseball aficionado and award-winning still life photographer, chose the 100 icons from the Hall of Fame’s immense archive and then meticulously photographed them. Included in the book are images of Shoeless Joe Jackson’s shoes, Cy Young’s mitt and a coveted Honus Wagner baseball card. This is the third book collaboration by Hinrichs, Heffernan and Hirasuna, after Long May She Wave and The Art of Gaman.

Pentagram 2008 Typography Calendar Now Available
Kit Hinrichs has designed Pentagram’s 2008 Classic Typographic Calendar using twelve typefaces designed by typographer Matthew Carter including Walker (originally designed in 1995 for the Walker Art Center), Snell Roundhand (a 1966 revival of 17th century English writing master Charles Snell) and Galliard (a 1978 anthology of Roman and Italian styles of French punch-cutter Robert Granjon). “I wanted to bring a new awareness of typographic design through this calendar,” said Hinrichs. “Typefaces are pervasive in our daily lives in everything we read and see around us and yet most people are oblivious of them or the circumstances in which they were created. We can gain a new perspective on our world by studying the origin of typefaces. I hope the calendar will encourage a new sensitivity to the importance of typeface usage and the work of Matthew Carter.”
The calendar is available in two sizes, a supersize 33-by-22 inch version suitable for wall hanging and a smaller 18-by-12 inch version appropriate for desk use. Both versions are available in the US and UK at kenknight.com. The price of the supersize calendar is $36 and the smaller desk and wall calendar is $22. (Prices do not include shipping.)

The Pentagram Papers Book
Since 1975 Pentagram has issued the Pentagram Papers, our limited edition series of booklets that examine “curious, entertaining, stimulating, provocative, and occasionally controversial points of view” related to design. Published once or twice a year, the Papers have been distributed exclusively to our friends and clients. Now, just in time for Pentagram’s 35th anniversary, the Papers have been collected and make their public debut in a new book, The Pentagram Papers, out now from Chronicle Books in the US and coming in February from Thames and Hudson in the UK.
Each Pentagram Paper explores a unique topic of interest—from the lights of London’s famed Savoy hotel to the pop architecture of Wildwood, New Jersey; from the mailboxes of rural Australia to the classroom aids of Mexico. The Pentagram Papers includes a detailed discussion of the series’ origins, reproductions of the 35 entries so far, and tucked in the back, a complete new paper, Marks of Africa, number 36 in the series.
Pentagram 2007 Classic Typographic Calendar
The 2007 edition of our popular typographic calendar is here! Designed by Kit Hinrichs, the award-winning calendar displays a classic typeface each month, with brief descriptions of the type designers, their birthdays, plus all major holidays for the United States and United Kingdom.
The calendar is available in two sizes: a super size 33-by-22 inch version suitable for wall hanging, and a smaller 18-by-12 inch version for wall and desk use. The retail price of the large version is $36 and the smaller version is $22. Both are available from Ken Knight.
