Hallelujah! It's a Pentagram Revival

Holy_Cow_Sm.jpg

On the evening of Saturday, 5 April, the Austin office and 250 of its closest friends had a “Revival” party to celebrate Pentagram’s commitment to the city of Austin and to give away our newest publication, the Black Book, affectionately nicknamed “The Bible” because it is printed on bible paper. The festive, eclectic crowd gathered under a big tent set up in the parking lot of the Pentagram building, where they were entertained first by the Durden Family gospel band and then by a driving rock and roll set from The Nouns. Guests included Bob “Daddy-O” Wade, the renowned Texas artist, and Joe Ely of the Flatlanders, fresh off a Houston gig with Bruce Springsteen.

It was an unforgettable night. Pictures after the jump!

An Evening with Jonathan Hoefler

jonathanhoefler.jpg

Pentagram’s London office was delighted to welcome members of the Typographic Circle on the evening of Tuesday, 8 April for a lecture by the typographer Jonathan Hoefler, a long-standing collaborator and friend of Pentagram.

As half of Hoefler & Frere-Jones, Jonathan has established a reputation as one of the world’s preeminent type designers. His talk, which coincides with a trip to London to act as a judge for the D&AD awards alongside Domenic Lippa and Harry Pearce amongst others, was used to introduce Typographic Circle members to his approach to typography.

Domenic Lippa, a former chairman of the Typographic Circle and an organiser of the talk, said of the evening: “It was great to be able to host an evening for the Typographic Circle, who I still help out with, but to be able to do it with such a good friend of Pentagram as Jonathan made it all the more enjoyable. It was a lovely evening.”

Hoefler & Frere-Jones have collaborated with Pentagram on several projects, including the design of typefaces for the New York Jets and Lever House.

The Typographic Circle is a not-for-profit organisation run entirely by volunteers which formed in 1976 to bring together anyone with an active interest in type and typography. Alongside a regular newsletter and a calendar of lectures and social events, all members receive free copies of the award-winning Circular Magazine, designed by Domenic Lippa. Each of the eleven participating designers and design firms were given an Eames’ classic “potato chip chair” to modify. Paula’s contribution was inspired by a typeface she designed called Pincushion. “We wanted to think of the object as something soft that could be punctured, in this case, with large hatpins, giving it the feeling of a pincushion” she said. “In our expression, the chair becomes a purely visual, rather than a utilitarian object.” Other participants include Ayse Birsel, David Rockwell, Todd Oldham and Maharam. The chairs will be auctioned off at the Herman Miller National Design Center in New York on 22 August.
