The Storyteller’s Art, a forty-year retrospective of Kit Hinrichs’s design work, opens tonight at the University Library Gallery at Sacramento State. The exhibition presents more than 200 pieces of his work and will be on view through 15 November.

The show considers Hinrichs’s designs—his choice of imagery, color, typeface and printing technique—as vehicles for storytelling. “What characterizes his work—whether it’s a corporate identity, museum exhibition, magazine or book—is a compelling storyline that communicates what the entity is all about in a manner that is evocative and memorable,” says Library Gallery Director Phillip Hitchcock. “Kit relies on storytelling devices—pacing, narrative voice, irony, surprise, humor, pathos—to engage audiences emotionally and draw them into the story in thought-provoking and memorable ways.”

Hinrichs will also give a lecture at the University Union’s Hinde Auditorium, Tuesday, 7 October from 4:00–6:00 p.m. He will discuss his unique approach to narrative design by presenting a series of case studies from his career.
